Year-Wise Trains Problems PYQs (2011-2024)

Q1. A train travels at a certain average speed for a distance of 63 km and then travels a distance of 72 km at an average speed of 6 km/h more than its original speed. If it takes 3 hours to complete the total journey, what is the original speed of the train in km/h? [CSAT 2013]

(a) 24

(b) 33

(c) 42

(d) 66

Solution:

Given that,

A train travels at a certain average speed for a distance of 63 km and then travels a distance of 72 km at an average speed of 6 km/h more than its original speed.

It takes 3 hours to complete the total journey.

Now,

Let the original speed of train = S km/hr

So,

63/S + 72/(S + 6) = 3......(i)

Solving the equation

(S - 42) (3S + 9) = 0

When

S - 42 = 0 , S  = 42 Km/hr

3S + 9 = 0 , S = - 3 (which is not possible)

Thus, S  = 42 Km/hr

Hence option (c) is correct

Q2. A freight train left Delhi for Mumbai at an average speed of 40 km/h. Two hours later, an express train left Delhi for Mumbai, following the freight train on a parallel track at an average speed of 60 km/h. How far from Delhi would the express train meet the freight train? [CSAT 2017]

(a) 480 km

(b) 260 km

(c) 240 km

(d) 120 km

Solution:

Given that,

A freight train left Delhi for Mumbai at an average speed of 40 km/h.

Two hours later, an express train left Delhi for Mumbai, following the freight train on a parallel track at an average speed of 60 km/h.

Now,

In 2 hr freight train will cover the distance = 40 x 2 = 80 km

Relative speed of trains = 60 - 40 = 20 km/hr

Time both train meets = 80/20 = 4 hrs

Distance = speed x time

= 60  x 4 = 240 km

Hence option (c) is correct

Q3. A train 200 meters long is moving at the rate of 40 km/h. In how many seconds will it cross a man standing near the railway line? [CSAT 2018]

(a) 12

(b) 15

(c) 16

(d) 18

Solution:

Given that,

A train 200 meters long is moving at the rate of 40 km/h.

Now,

Time to cross the man = M

Time = 200/(40 x 5/18) = (200 x 9)/100  = 18 seconds

Hence option (d) is correct
